Education of Great Manchester

The perfect cody good morning hi are you up and dressed and all ready for the exam i'm not dressed you really need to be ready and you really need to be on your way to school for the english exam which starts at all right see you in a bit bye i think she just woke up morning folks no coat needed for you hard as nails good morning what have you got there from stands nice every emotion except boredom is probably a good way to describe being a head teacher because every day is different what are you waiting for exams english let's give it everything we've got please,

It's a challenging job but at the same time is the most incredible job the most rewarding job a job where you come in and say i'm going to change somebody's life if i do my job properly it's january and the start of the gcse mock exam period at harropfold come on folks straight to where we need to be please wine gums for breakfast mmm nutritious and delicious i hear 11 is doing their exams now i thought they were doing it in g box that's what i don't understand and mock isn't a real example why do it that's what i don't know   g1a is that where your exam is yeah i don't know where that is one of them down there good luck i know you're gonna grab it by scruff at neck okay i don't really know why the government invented exams to be honest my top tip side was to like not be distracted by your mates,

And the worst one's probably my phone   to be honest with y'all uh the mocks i think pointless people are like right well that's sad not gonna bother with that kim what are you telling me you're not allowed or you're not going in i'm not allowed and i'm not going in but you can't do that you need to get and to do your example and get in use your brain here kim and you look at me in the eye i think you're doing this on purpose because you don't want to be around i don't want to stay in there i don't wanna sit in there i know but it's not about what you want 140 people don't wanna do it but they're doing it no i'm not doing it now i'm not doing it it's half of this is because you're worried is that what you're saying sit down   you're about to do your exams in in april may,

You are doing proper gcses and kim if you pull this you're going to get your gcse paper ripped up good no but you don't think that's good remember i've worked with you for five years i'm not letting you give up on your gcses why because i care too much as educators you're like come on why on earth would you not put pen to paper and show everyone how good you could be why would you not do it but then very quickly in your head you start going actually why are they not doing it there'll be a reason why they're not doing it and that's going to be something along the lines of confidence or it's easier not to do the exam and then say well i didn't even bother trying in the exam than doing the exam trying your best and failing,

Because we don't like to fail come on miss you would you rather go off the corridor come on okay i'll drink or anything no yeah year 11 shannon has come to see mr povey rather than sit her exam so what is it about the exams exactly that's worrying you just not being able to do it but you are bright but i'm not because it can't do anything do you really believe that you actually can't do the work in fact before we even talk about your work let's talk about you as a person and i've only known one issue i had to deal with do you remember that accident thing you did with mr malalu that time with the pen and you were like oh my goodness sir the pens hit him and i didn't ever mean it to that's the only major thing i've ever known from you,

And i know enough about life shannon to know that if somebody with a really good attitude puts enough work in they'll do well i'm bricking it i want to go college to be a forensic criminal psychologist and i need to get three a to bs and then five c's i feel like i can't do what everyone's always saying that i can what's the point of these marks to get those ready for them yeah they're a practice and if you're not confident nick some of my confidence because i believe in you 100 we've got to get these kids ready not just for the exams that they'll be sitting but getting them ready for life and confidence we know is the difference between somebody applying for that fantastic university and the dreamed they could have gone off,

And not you're brilliant you're not seeing it at the moment but i'll make you see it by hook or by crook i'll find a way of making you see it sound good should we get you back in come on you want another tissue you have to pay for them you know for free thank you sir hello team this meeting kind of being hijacked slightly in light of the marks and we just felt it was useful to have a conversation as well hand over to drew thanks for your time i do appreciate it mr povey has called a meeting with his senior teaching staff i don't want to be coming in like the prince of darkness at the beginning of this meeting spreading a lot of negativity but we know the exam series this year is going to be tougher than it ever has been we know that coursework has been reduced if not completely taken away,

We know that we're dealing with a whole different measurement within english and maths and we're looking at all the courses are becoming more rigorous so it's not going to get any easier talk about the cards being stacked against you the whole exam system has become so big and so important because you can measure that really easily what we've found at harep is is that the cuts over the last nine years have really had a big impact take for example with 35 36 students in some classes you're not going to have some of the resources available to help them with learning so it's a real challenge.
